Your privacy
Privacy Policy
Poetic is built to be quiet, in how it feels and in how it treats your data.
The short version: Poetic has no account and no login. Your saved pieces and preferences live in your own private iCloud, where we cannot see them. We collect no advertising identifiers, track no location, and never sell your data.
This Privacy Policy explains what information the Poetic app (“Poetic,” “we,” “us”) does and does not collect, how it is used, and the choices you have. It applies to the Poetic iOS application and this website. By using Poetic, you agree to this policy.
Who we are
Poetic is made by Poetic Studios LLC. If you have any question about this policy or your data, email us at poeticstudios.ops@gmail.com. A real person will respond.
Information we do not collect
- No account. There is no sign-up, no username, and no password. We do not ask for your name, email, phone number, or address to use the app.
- No advertising identifiers. Poetic does not use the IDFA or any cross-app tracking identifier. Because of this, the app shows no App Tracking Transparency prompt, because there is nothing to track.
- No location. We do not request or store your location. Our analytics provider is explicitly configured to discard IP-based geolocation, so no location is derived on the server either.
- No sale of data. We do not, and will not, sell your personal information to anyone.
Your content and preferences (private iCloud)
The pieces you save and the choices you make (your selected topics per surface, your theme, your reading position, your notification schedule) are stored in your own private iCloud accountusing Apple’s CloudKit private database. This lets your Poetic experience sync silently across your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
This data belongs to you. It is held in your personal iCloud, governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy, and Poetic Studios LLC cannot read it. We never receive a copy of your saved pieces or preferences.
Anonymous product analytics (PostHog)
To understand how Poetic is used and to make it better, we collect a small amount of anonymous, aggregate product analytics through PostHog, using their US-hosted cloud. This is deliberately minimal and configured for privacy:
- Anonymous only. Analytics are tied to a random, app-generated identifier for your install, not to your name, email, or Apple ID.
- No automatic capture. We disable autocapture, screen-view tracking, and session replay. We record only a handful of deliberate, named events, such as when the app is opened, or a step of first-time setup is completed.
- Basic preferences, in aggregate. We store non-identifying profile properties like your selected theme, how many topics you follow, and whether you have a premium subscription, so we can answer questions like “which themes are most loved.”
- No location. Server-side IP geolocation is switched off, so no location data is stored on any analytics event.
PostHog processes this data on our behalf as a service provider. You can read the PostHog Privacy Policy.
Subscriptions and purchases (RevenueCat & Apple)
Poetic offers an optional auto-renewing subscription, “Poetic Premium.” Purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store. We never see or receive your credit-card number or payment details. Apple processes all payments under its own privacy policy.
We use RevenueCatto manage subscription status, to know whether your “Poetic Premium” entitlement is active so the app can unlock the right features. RevenueCat receives the anonymous transaction information Apple provides and an anonymous identifier for your install (which we link to the analytics identifier above so purchase and usage stay on the same anonymous profile). RevenueCat acts as our service provider; see the RevenueCat Privacy Policy.
Notifications
If you turn on “Windows of Light,” Poetic schedules notifications locally on your device to deliver writing on the schedule you choose. These are generated on-device. We do not operate a push server that profiles you, and turning notifications off in iOS Settings stops them entirely.
How we use information
- To sync your saved pieces and preferences across your devices (via your iCloud).
- To operate the subscription and unlock premium features you purchase.
- To understand, in aggregate and anonymously, how Poetic is used so we can improve it.
- To diagnose crashes and technical problems.
Sharing
We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for advertising. We rely on a small set of service providers who process data on our behalf under their own privacy commitments: Apple (iCloud sync, payments), PostHog (anonymous analytics), and RevenueCat (subscription management). We may also disclose information if we believe in good faith that it is required by law, legal process, or a governmental request, or is necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of our users, the public, or Poetic Studios LLC.
Aggregated and de-identified data
We may create and use aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably be used to identify you. This information is not personal information, and we may use and retain it for any lawful purpose, including analysing and improving Poetic. Where we hold information in de-identified form, we will not attempt to re-identify it except as permitted by law.
Data retention
Your content and preferences remain in your iCloud until you delete them or remove the app and clear its iCloud data. Anonymous analytics are retained by PostHog on a rolling basis for product analysis. Because analytics are not linked to your identity, they cannot be traced back to you individually.
Security
Data synced through iCloud is protected by Apple’s security infrastructure. Analytics and subscription data are transmitted over encrypted connections. No system is perfectly secure, but we minimise risk by collecting as little as possible in the first place.
Children
Poetic is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Because the app requires no personal information to use, it collects none from any user by default.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example, under the EU/UK GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information, and to object to certain processing. Because Poetic stores your content in your own iCloud and keeps analytics anonymous, you can exercise most of these rights directly: delete saved pieces in the app, manage iCloud data in iOS Settings, and manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple ID settings. For any request or question, email poeticstudios.ops@gmail.com and we will help.
Your California privacy rights
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (together, the “CCPA”), gives you certain rights. Because Poetic requires no account and keeps analytics anonymous, we collect very little about you, and:
- We do not sell your personal information, and we do not “share” it for cross-context behavioural advertising as those terms are defined by the CCPA. We have not done so in the preceding twelve months.
- The only information associated with your install is a random, anonymous identifier and the limited analytics and subscription-status data described above. We do not collect sensitive personal information as defined by the CCPA.
- You have the right to know what we collect, to request access or deletion, to correct information, and not to be discriminated against for exercising your rights. You can exercise most of these directly in the app and in your iOS and Apple ID settings, or by emailing us.
- You may use an authorised agent to submit a request on your behalf; we may ask for proof of that authorisation and to verify your identity before we act.
Your agreement
Your use of Poetic is also governed by our Terms & Conditions, including the disclaimers and limitation of liability set out there, which apply to your use of the app and to this Privacy Policy.
Scope
Poetic is currently offered in the United States, and this policy is written for that context. If we expand to other regions, we will update this policy accordingly.
About the writing in Poetic
The literary works Poetic surfaces are drawn from the public domain and are, to the best of our knowledge, free of copyright in the United States. This concerns intellectual property rather than personal data; for details, and for how to raise any concern about a specific work, please see our Terms & Conditions.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
